in maryland and the district. in dc, mayor fenty is trying to fight off an intense challenge from city council chairman vincent gray. kristin fisher is live at the board of elections with more on this democratic primary contest. good morning, kristin. >> good morning, andrea. you know there is no republican challenger in this race. this is it are it. so whoever wins today will be the next mayor of washington, d.c. yesterday both candidates hit the trail hard. chasing down last-minute votes. by almost all accounts the mayor is in trouble. the latest poll showed him trailing gray. but both sides say their focus is on getting out the vote not the poll numbers. >> i can't pay attention to that. ry to pay attention to getting people out to vote. that's one of the most important things of all. and we are working hard on. that we are making calls and people knocking on doors an

vans all over the streets of the city. the focus is on getting people out. >> since the polls are out they looked at both records and they are saying fenty has some things to work on second term but far and away much more competent record, more competent person to run the city for next four years. >> reporter: fenty was stumping while sporting a redskins jersey, why? he said because sunday night the redskins showed it doesn't matter what experts say when you have heart, effort and you believe in what you are doing. now the polls in dc will open at 7:00 this morning. this is the fist year in dc that there is same-day registration. what that means is that unless there is a blowout in the primary battle for dc mayor it could be ten days before we know whether or not mayor fenty will get another term in office or if vincent gray will be the next mayor of dc. >> thank you. maryland is holding its

primary elections today. in heavily democratic prince georges county, five candidates are hoping to win that party's nomination for county executive. a new flyer campaign against sheriff jackson isn't from his main opponent baker but a union. the pamphlet recalls two dogs shot and killed by sheriffs deputies two years ago. sciu paid for the flyers. >> there are many examples of how he operates that agency and the fear is he would operate the county in the same way. >> reporter: a spokeswoman says the union represents 1700 health care workers at prince georges hospital. they have put out negative ads in oh races. he said the ad sponsors know nothing about his accomplishments. polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the district. on our website you can look up voter guides urn 9 news extras and to find a polling place

just click on where you live. in other news, police say a dispute between two neighbors in springfield, virginia over a traffic speed bump led to murder. the body of steven cay was found at his home on field master drive on sunday night. police arrested and charged his neighbor, 44-year-old david patton with murder. they say he stormed in to carr's home and tied up him and his girlfriend before shooting carr. they say he may have been mad at the addition of a street bump. residents were shocked. >> i can't get over the fact it is senseless. >> it is senseless. ridiculous and so sad. >> reporter: in june, dave patton was arrested for assaulting steven carr outside of his home. his court date for that charge was set for thursday. he is now charged with second- degree murder and is in fairfax jail without bond. police in florida are trying to solve the murder of a

businessman from alexandria, virginia. sam dell broco was the founder of pci communication. he traveled several times a month to a home in pomp know beach where deputies found miss body inside of the home which is in a gated community. police have not said how he was killed ever an armored car guard is expected to recover after being shot in the face. the guard was shot yesterday afternoon in southeast washington as he and his partner made a pick up at a popeye's restaurant on malcolm x avenue. police did not say whether the shooter got any money but said the wounded guard was conscious and breathing. president obama made his latest economic pitch in a fairfax county neighborhood. he spoke to just 20 people in one couple's backyard. >> we are still in this wrestling match with john boehner and mitch mccon nell about the last 2 to 3% where, on average, we'd be giving them $100,000 for people making 1

the gap came to $90 billion in august which puts the treasury department on pace for $1.3 trillion deficits for the year. that would be less than 2009 but the second highest ever. the pay gap between men and women has shrunk to a record low. women earn 43% of the median weekly wage for men. in the second quarter of ten, that is up from 76% a decade ago. the rise is partly because many women are prospering in the new economy and many men are being laid off. that is 83 cents on the dollar. and we have a little ways to go. >> coming up, we will talk about how much it will cost you to get a flu shot this year and suggestions for keeping the cost down. >> good advice because we need the shots. >> we do indeed. metro is showcasing dozens of vehicles they unveiled new buses, metro access vehicles.

a section of natural gas pine line is on the way to washington as they try to figure out what caused the explosion and fire which killed four people near san francisco. pacific gas and electric is receiving up a $800 million fund to help the victims. a fire near boulder started on labor day and destroyed at least 186 homes. some 2,000 evacwees will now be allowed to return home, but now firefighters are battling another blaze 30 miles away. the family of an american woman

the fenty campaign is fighting allegations his campaign tried to exchange campaign jobs for votes. gray's campaign is fighting off accusations that his campaign was bribing voters with supermarket gift cards. so pretty serious allegations on both sides and those issues took center stage as both took to the streets yesterday on the final day of campaigning before the polls opened at 7 a.m. today. now, gray is running on a message of change on bringing transparency and team work back to dc government. mayor fenty is focusing on what he has accomplished in office, specifically in dc's public schools as he is trying to shake off accusations of being arrogant an autocratic. 20,000 people have already voted early in the district and it is in the looking good, so far, for the incumbent. the latest polls put him between 7 and 17 points behind gray. yesterday we asked both candidates, are you prepared

win or lose? here's what they had to say. >> we are going to win. we are absolutely prepared to win because we have been have put in the right amount of work in the administration. >> you don't want to focus on losing. i'm focusing on winning. but i love the city and no matter the outcome i will do whatever i can to support our city. >> reporter: this is of course a local race, but it is still getting a ton of national attention. and that's because many people feel the you come of this primary could have some significant implications in terms of the national debate over education reform. that's been a big part of mayor fenty's campaign. so a lot at stake today, andrea, both for the candidates and their causes. >> thank you for that update. in maryland, linda lamone is estimating 38% of voters will turn out in the primary. she says nice weather and a variety of races in montgomery

last night associate justice steven briar spoke at the national archives. while talking about his new back called "making a democracy work, a judge's view "he said the court should not be seen as a political entity. >> i think that more and more people think what the court does is political and that this is nine junior varsity politician and everything tells them that. >> reporter: so at the national archives a new exhibit called the charters of freedom is on display. it features documents which sparked the first pushes for revolution in the american colonies to papers from the turning point in the fight to get voting rights for minorities and women. howard bernstein is here. we are looking for rain in the forecast. in the meantime, temperatures

yesterday we had a breezy afternoon. clear to partly cloudy tonight, low 50sin the western, southwestern suburbs. low 80s in town and by the bay. talking about the drought. this is the latest information. look at the tray weather from new england, pennsylvania, new jersey across much of our region. when you go down you start to see moderate to severe drought across virginia and in the delmarva area to salisbury n. west virginia this is where we have the extreme drought from martinsburg to berkeley springs and hedgesville in to northern frederick county, virginia. this is where we are desperate for rain. looks like we will have not much in the way of rain chances until late thursday, friday. we need good soaking rain to catch up. temperatures in the 50s this morning. winchester is 65. it is 66 here in washington. it is mid-60s in southern maryland. fredericksburg 63.
